Safety Precautions for Slides

　　 When choosing a slide that’s right for your child, it’s important not only to consider the material and design but also to select equipment appropriate for their age, ensuring their safety. Below are several criteria for selecting a slide, provided as a guide for parents:

　　Armrest height above the waist

　　Many older slides are made of concrete, which poses a serious safety risk for children. The protective handrails on either side of these concrete slides are too low; for safety, the handrail height must be higher than a child’s waist to prevent them from falling off the side.

　　One-piece molding

　　The upper platform of a slide should have no threshold—there must be no height difference; it should be seamlessly integrated. The slide surface must be smooth and free of seams to prevent clothing or cords from getting caught or snagged. Additionally, the top of the slide should feature an archway to guide children into a seated position before they begin sliding.

　　A height is left at the bottom.

　　At the bottom of a slide, the platform should not be flush with the ground; instead, it should be raised 22 to 42 centimeters. This design allows children to stand up quickly after sliding, preventing them from being caught off guard and injured by the child behind them who is still in use.

　　Sufficient buffer space

　　Slope and buffer space are inextricably linked: the steeper the slide, the longer the required buffer zone—especially for spiral slides, which demand even more clearance. Consequently, slides must be designed with greater length. According to Lin Jiazhen, the slope should be kept within 40 degrees and not exceed this angle, and the buffer area must extend at least 180 centimeters around all sides of the equipment.

　　Age-Appropriate Selection

　　According to U.S. data, toddlers aged 0 to 2 are best suited to indoor, short, low slides, while children aged 5 to 12 can safely enjoy steeper, taller slides—such as spiral, wave‑shaped, or 360‑degree rotating designs.

　　Parental Reminders

　　U.S. research has found that 75% of accidental injuries are caused by falls. Therefore, when accompanying children on an open‑style slide, parents should stand on both sides and move in tandem with the child as they descend; otherwise, an accidental fall from either side could result in serious injury. For enclosed slides, parents should position themselves at the base, closely monitoring to ensure the child slides down safely and does not become stuck midway. Additionally, if the area beneath the slide is a ball pit, parents should explicitly instruct children not to bury themselves in the balls, as other children might inadvertently injure them.

　　Since most accidental injuries result from falls, the surface material is also critical and should be a soft‑surface flooring with a high impact‑absorption rating. In the United States, where the climate is relatively dry, playgrounds are typically surrounded by fine sand that is at least 15 centimeters deep. By contrast, Taiwan’s humid climate and significant issues with pet feces—particularly from cats and dogs—have led to the widespread use of rubber or plastic‑rubber mats; their thickness, softness, elasticity, and impact‑absorption performance must be carefully evaluated to ensure they can effectively prevent injury from falls.
